Welcome to Sicily!

Italian Courses in Sicily

Syracuse is known as the greatest classical Greek city outside of Athens, full of history and art, expressing all the variety and all the cultural richness of Sicily. Today Syracuse, with its 200.000 inhabitants, is divided into two parts: the modern part in expansion, and the historic island centre of Syracuse, Ortigia. The old centre immediately reveals the charm of a city that has witnessed almost three thousand years of history and the significant expressions of the most important Mediterranean civilizations.

One of the most popular craft products in Syracuse is papyrus paper: the area around the Ciane River is the only one in Italy where this rare, valuable plant grows. The local pottery, sold in the characteristic laboratories-workshops so frequent in this part of Sicily is also worth looking at. Other typical objects that can be found in Syracuse’s shops are gold or other less precious metal copies of ancient Syracuse coins that were used in the era when the city was compared to Athens and Carthage for its size and power.

Along Ortigia’s outer walls you will find a vibrant open air market with endless stalks selling fresh Mediterranean fish, fruits, vegetables, household items and even clothes. If you prefer to take home some food and drink as a souvenir, for yourself or for some relatives and friends, we recommend a great range of choice of wines (Nero d’Avola, Contessa Entellina, Etna), or a jar of the famous “vegetable preserves” that are made from the local products (as tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, etc).

Our Italian School in Sicily

The school is located in the heart of the ancient city, Ortigia, in a completely restored 15th century Sicilian building. The building includes a traditional central courtyard and three floors, newly renovated to include large air conditioned classrooms, computer lab and multimedia room with audio and video facilities, photography lab, painting studio, library and student lounge.
